Draft for review: this policy hasn’t yet been reviewed by an attorney. It describes how the current version of PipSpeech works.
Effective date: [to be set at launch]
PipSpeech is a tool for speech-language pathologists (SLPs), educators and caregivers (“you”) to use with the children they work with. Children use PipSpeech only under the supervision of an adult who sets it up.
To make the app work, PipSpeech saves the following only in your browser’s storage on the device you use. It isn’t sent to us:
You can delete this at any time: use Progress → Clear history and My decks → Delete deck in the app, or clear your browser’s data for this site.
When you choose to connect a phone remote or a teletherapy screen, the current game state is passed through our relay server to the devices in that session in real time. That includes the student’s nickname, the current picture or question, and scores. The relay does not store this information. It is kept in memory only while the session is connected and is discarded when everyone leaves. Session links use random codes.
The microphone is used only when you choose to record your voice for a custom deck. Recordings stay on your device. The read-aloud button uses your device’s built-in text-to-speech voice.
PipSpeech does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Children don’t create accounts, and the app asks for nicknames rather than real names. When a school uses PipSpeech, the school directs its use. Where we handle any student information on a school’s behalf, we act as a “school official” under FERPA, use it only to provide the service, and never for advertising or profiling. We’ll sign district data privacy agreements, including the SDPC National Data Privacy Agreement.
We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies. The app uses browser storage only to function as described above. If we add privacy-friendly usage analytics in the future, they will not include student information, and we will update this policy first.
We use HTTPS for all connections, keep data on your device where possible, and limit what passes through our servers to what the feature needs.
We’ll post any changes here and update the effective date. For material changes affecting schools, we’ll notify account holders before they take effect.
